Saint-Véran "Les Cras" 2023 – Domaine Jacques Saumaize
Saint-Véran "Les Cras" is a characterful cuvée marked by a deep mineral imprint. Sourced from a sunny, south-facing terroir resting on very stony limestone soil, it offers a masterful balance between power and freshness. The nose reveals aromas of white-fleshed fruits (peach, pear), complemented by spring flower notes and a hint of flint. On the palate, the wine commands beautiful density and ripe substance, immediately energized by saline acidity and a crystalline finish. Less opulent than some Pouilly-Fuissé, this Saint-Véran shines through its precision and ability to translate the purity of limestone. A great Burgundian white, both sharp and vibrant.

The Radiance of a Stony Terroir The "Les Cras" cuvée is vinified by Anthony and Jacques Saumaize to highlight the vertical structure of the Chardonnay.
-
Exceptional Terroir: The soil here is composed of hard limestone. This configuration forces the vines to dig deep, granting the wine its characteristic mineral tension and saline finish.
-
Measured Aging: The wine is aged for about 11 months on fine lees, primarily in stainless steel tanks with a small proportion of oak barrels (around 15%). This preserves the fruit's brilliance while adding a light patina.
-
Accessibility and Longevity: While "Les Cras" is seductive in its youth for its crispness, its limestone structure allows it to develop beautifully over 5 to 7 years.
