Domaine Henri Delagrange Pommard: Les Vaumuriens Hauts, a great terroir of character

The Domaine Henri Delagrange Pommard Les Vaumuriens Hauts reveals the full personality of an emblematic climate located on the heights of the appellation. Situated above the famous Rugiens, the vines benefit from a privileged environment where altitude, stony soils, and the parent rock favor a slow maturation of Pinot Noir.

This cuvée expresses a unique face of Pommard. The traditional power of the appellation is accompanied here by remarkable freshness and a mineral framework that brings a lot of elegance. The Domaine Henri Delagrange primarily seeks balance to preserve the identity of the terroir without masking the natural finesse of the grape variety.

Accessible after a few years in the cellar, this wine also has excellent aging potential and will delight lovers of great red Burgundies.

A family estate in the heart of the Côte de Beaune

Based in Volnay for several generations, the Domaine Henri Delagrange cultivates a heritage of vines spread across some of the most beautiful appellations of the Côte de Beaune.

Since 2023, the estate has been committed to organic farming, illustrating a desire to sustainably preserve the soils and biodiversity. The harvest is carried out exclusively by hand to select only the highest quality clusters.

The vinifications favor gentle extractions to maintain the purity of the fruit and the finesse of the tannins. The aging process then accompanies the wine discreetly, never dominating the expression of the terroir.

A philosophy focused on precision

Every decision aims to faithfully translate the identity of the vintage and the climate.

The work of the winemaker supports the wine without seeking to alter its personality.

Domaine Henri Delagrange Pommard and the climate Les Vaumuriens Hauts

The Domaine Henri Delagrange Pommard comes from the climate Les Vaumuriens Hauts, a lieu-dit located on the hills overlooking Pommard, in immediate proximity to the prestigious Rugiens.

The vineyard covers nearly 70 ares. The vines, around forty years old, are planted at a density of 10,000 plants per hectare on a very poor soil resting directly on the parent rock. This configuration naturally limits yields and promotes remarkable concentration of the grapes.

This elevated location also brings more freshness than some lower sectors of the appellation. The Pinot Noir develops a more taut expression here, where the minerality perfectly balances the richness of the fruit.

A terroir that prioritizes elegance

Les Vaumuriens Hauts produces structured yet always refined wines.

This finesse distinguishes this cuvée from the more massive profiles often associated with Pommard.

A winemaking process serving Pinot Noir

After a manual harvest, the grapes are fully destemmed before a maceration of about eighteen days in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks.

The estate intentionally limits punch downs to preserve the delicacy of the fruit. A few pump-overs allow for a gradual extraction of tannins and color.

Aging continues for twelve months in oak barrels, with only 10 to 20% new wood, followed by four additional months in stainless steel tanks to refine the balance before bottling.

A restrained aging

The wood supports the structure without masking the character of the terroir.

Freshness and precision remain at the heart of the estate's style.

A tasting between power and finesse

The color displays a beautiful intensity, a deep red with garnet reflections.

The nose reveals aromas of blackberry, blueberry, redcurrant, and cherry pit. With a few years of aging, notes of underbrush, soft spices, fine leather, and a more wild touch characteristic of great Pommard gradually emerge.

On the palate, the attack is ample, driven by a generous body. The tannins are present but perfectly integrated. A beautiful mineral tension prolongs the tasting and adds a lot of balance to the whole.

The finish, persistent and elegant, leaves a remarkable impression of depth.

Domaine Henri Delagrange Pommard over the years

Young, the Domaine Henri Delagrange Pommard primarily expresses crunchy black fruits, freshness, and beautiful energy.

After five to ten years in the cellar, the aromas gain complexity with notes of truffle, leather, dry leaves, spices, and underbrush.

The tannins gradually soften while the minerality retains its precision.

This evolution confirms the great aging potential of the best terroirs of Pommard.

Tasting advice

Serve this bottle between 14 and 16 °C.

An hour of aeration will allow the bouquet to reveal all its complexity, especially on the young vintages.

Older bottles can simply be opened shortly before serving to preserve their aromatic finesse.
